Since April 2019, I've been working as a Research Engineer at the Center for Human Compatible AI at Berkeley, collaborating with graduate students on machine learning research on problems foundational to making sure AI systems benefit and work well within human systems. My work here changes depending on my collaborator, but some of my favorite past projects have included Adversarial Policies, a paper demonstrating that you can train policies to generate behavior adversarial to their opponent (in the adversarial examples sense), and current work on a project to implement a baseline suite of algorithms that learn from human demonstration and feedback to solve tasks in Minecraft.
From October 2017 through January 2019, I worked as a Senior Data Scientist on an applied machine learning research and development group within Sophos, where I experimented with combining, implementing, and evaluating approaches from deep learning literature to problems of malicious web and file detection. While in the role, I spent time coding up new Pytorch and Keras implementations, brainstorming approaches to problems, and contributing research and experimentation to published and in-progress papers and talks.
From May 2015 through September 2017, I worked as a Data Scientist at LendUp , on a team deeply embedded into the product, with a strong mandate to use machine learning as a core competency of the Fintech business model. Here, I took on technical ownership of fraud detection and designed a novel anomaly detection framework, conducted lit reviews and became a core team resource on questions of model explainability and fairness, and had primary ownership of training, validating, and launching a production ML model.
My academic background is a broad-based foundation in social science, with specialization in data science and analytics built on top. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Tulane University with a B.S. in Mathematical Economics. I then went on to complete a M.S. in Analytics (a program now called Data Science) at the University of San Francisco.
